Damien Hirst's prints at his London art publishing company, Other Criteria's, Armory Show booth shimmered and shined using specialty printing inks and applications.

The print at left, Death or Glory - Oriental Gold-European Gold Glorious Skull uses two slightly different tones of golf foil while the print at left, For the Love of God, uses diamond dust.

Now, if Damien Hirst jumped off a bridge I wouldn't say you should jump off after him, but he IS a global contemporary art trend-setter, so maybe you should consider incorporating some specialty processes in your prints!

Check out our Specialty Inks + Applications class running this Friday (3/16) from 7-10pm.

Rachel Pollak, It Is Written, It Is Said (detail), gouache on paper

...the I and the We
gouache on paper pieces by Rachel Pollak
on view February 8th - March 5th

Join us for the opening reception!
Friday February 10th, 6-9pm
///RSVP on Facebook

Chosen from entries to our GET SERIOUS GO SOLO solo exhibition contest, Rachel Pollak's sensitive paintings of ritual captured us with their quiet significance and simultaneously sparse and ornate spaces.

Rachel on her work:

"In my work I am seeking out moments when an “I” becomes a “We”—and moments when these affiliations break down. My gouache paintings are inspired by rituals I observe in everyday life: crew members raking the infield dirt at the seventh-inning stretch, children playing parachute games, the inauguration of a new president. By re-imagining the context of these rituals, and their accompanying furniture, uniforms, and equipment, my works consider the tension between the persistent identities of the individuals in these scenes and the groups they are a part of."

As our GET SERIOUS GO SOLO winner, Pollak also receives a free 1 month studio pass to explore what print can bring to her work.

"The content of this work-- focused on the relationships between individuals and groups--would lend itself in an ideal way to the the print medium and its traditions of multiples, repeat patterns, and narrative series,"  Rachel says of exploring print.

DJ J. Dayz was on the turntables while SoBe served up free SoBe Lifewater cocktails as guests drank, danced and printed the night away.

SoBe gave away free t-shirts, skateboards, posters that guests could print their choice of urban-themed designs at the SoBe "Screen Print Everything" stations.  In addition to the "Screen Print Everything" stations, the event featured a Button Making Studio where guests fished through a collection collage materials and designed n' pressed their own pop icon buttons. In the Vintage SoBe World Van guests goofed with the Try a New Look App, a program that adds a handlebar mustache, extravagant beard, crazy 'do or animated accessories to photos of you or your friends which could be shared on Facebook, Twitter or via Email.

All in all a fabulous night. Thanks again SoBe!

Andrea von Bujdoss, AKA "Queen Andrea" is a New York City based fine artist, illustrator, graffiti artist and graphic designer. A native New Yorker raised in the vibrant Soho neighborhood of Manhattan, Andrea has been inspired by the urban landscape from an early age. As a young adult, she befriended some of the most prolific old school graffiti writers and then earned her BFA in Graphic Design. Now Andrea works for widely known brands who appreciate both the urban creative flavor of her work and her versatile and passionate knowledge of typography, branding and visual communication.

She is one of the most skilled female graffiti artists in the country, possessing an explosively creative style inspired by the excitement of the urban landscape. Her custom lettering portfolio has grown beyond graffiti and is a comprehensive collection of letter studies and design explorations.

She has been featured in major art shows, toy shows, magazines, books, fashion lines and brand collaborations. Andrea has curated and exhibited in numerous exhibitions nationally and is currently preparing for her New York City solo show debut at Fuse Gallery in July 2012.

Andrea says of her work "the excitement, color, diversity and wild energy of city life, and especially graffiti, is where I find my creative inspiration. Renegade cutting-edge artforms and lifestyles that have sprang forth from an ever-changing urban metropolis give me the visual stimulus, guts, and urge to create and innovate.

My artistic style is bolstered by themes of fame, the advertising age, the golden age of hip hop, funk music, typography, geometry, sign painter lettering, superheroes, bling, diamonds and bombastic bright color."
