This Saturday, May 28th at 5:30pm is the opening reception of MASS MoCA's "The Workers," featuring prints from Gowanus Print Lab members Carla Herrera-Prats and Anthony Graves of Camel Collective! "The Workers" presents a contemporary portrait of the precarity, invisitiblity, and mobility of laborers today. The past, present, and future of the worker as individual and group is mused by 40 international artists in this exhibit co-curated by Herrera-Prats and MASS MoCA curator Susan Cross. As a factory-turned-museum, MASS MoCA is a fitting exhibition space for an exhibit tracking the shift realities of global economy in a post-Great Recession world.
Camel Collective's Herrera-Prats and Graves screen printed layer upon layer of archival photographs and deocuments detailing the Sprague Electric Company strike of 1970 right here in the GPL studio. Printed on canvas, Herrera-Prats and Graves adopted a painterly approach to screen printing, combining elements of screen print, monotype, and collage. Camel Collective has prepared an installation piece for the exhibit in partner with the canvas works.
Camel Collective is a shifting group of contemporary artists centered around collaborative practice. Founded in 2005, Camel Collective is currently composed of artists Carla Herrera-Prats, Anthony Graves, and Lasse Lau.
"The Workers" will be on view May 29th, 2011 through March 15th, 2012 at MASS MoCA. Opening in tandem with "The Workers" is "I am Searching for Field Character," a series of public conversations, performance, installations and workshops held in a newly reopened industrial building on the MASS MoCA grounds.
Oh, and its a beer garden Thursday and Friday nights throughout the summer.
